2.4 Million E-mails are Sent In a Single Second

 Source

The Internet is spiraling out of control. Yeah, you already knew that. But did you know that 1.4 billion GB of Internet traffic have been used as of 6:30 PM today? (It's April 18, 2014.) Or that by the same time today, over two million tons of carbon dioxide were emitted from using the Internet? There are nearly 3 billion Internet users in the world as of the time this post was published. And we're watching approximately 82,000 YouTube videos and sending 2.4 million e-mails every second. This post is just one of 2,650,500 (so far) blog posts written today.
Crazy, huh?
You can find detailed Internet stats from the day, updating in real time, here, and some visual aids of per-second stats here. There's a couple more mind-blowing pages on that site, and I bet they'll shock you. They certainly shocked me!
You knew this filing cabinet of junk we call the Internet was huge, but did you know just how vast it really is?

You Can View Every Instagram Selfie as It's Posted/ The First Selfie was Taken in 1839

Oxford itself pronounced "selfie" Word of the Year in 2013. I'm sure you know what selfies are, but in case you are a newborn baby or a sentient plant (in either case, congratulations for learning how to read!), here's the run-down: a selfie is a picture you take of yourself, usually using your camera phone. However, the stereotypical selfie consists of a teenage girl smirking at herself in the bathroom mirror, holding her phone out in front of her, and snapping a picture, which she usually posts immediately to the social media site (or sites) of her choice. Usually after adding a glamorous filter, so she looks smoother-skinned and tanned. This is a small taste of the many filters she could add: filters!
(SHH. Confession time: Before you get the wrong idea, know that I take selfies too, but fortunately, I don't post them online, as they are hideous creatures to be stored deep in my computer under misleading file names--seen only when I search for my Photoshop projects and realize scary_vampire_girl.jpg is actually me--and would give people nightmares. So no, dear reader, you will never get to see a selfie of me. Shame, I know you like all things horror.)

Why in the bathroom, though?? I mean, I know you want to see yourself in the bathroom mirror to make sure your duck face is FANTABULOUS, but seriously, it's like, "Oh, better make sure you can see the sink, because it's so gorgeously shiny, and the toilet, because it's such a boss at being a porcelain throne, it deserves a throne of its own."

 Source of this duck face

Of course, there's no law against taking selfies outside of bathrooms. You could, for instance, do this:

...or not. There is a law against that. Think of the fine! Although that guy's face never fails to crack me up. Heh heh.
So now that you know what a selfie is, you sentient plant you, you'll get what Selfeed is all about. Cleverly named, this site will flash you every Instagram photo tagged #selfie as it's posted. It's not the kind of site you could spend hours on (I would be a leetle disturbed and very concerned if you did), but it's interesting, for a few minutes, to watch the never-ceasing real-time flow of self-portraits and to realize what a self-feed one of the most prominent social media sites is. (Dang, did you notice how many dashes were in that sentence?) And you can post a pic to Instagram using your phone while watching for it on your computer screen! Just make sure it's tagged #selfie.

Our second topic today will be the first selfie ever. It's so beautiful, with a duck face and a "sexy" pose and a toilet and oversized sunglasses and a cool filter. It's the very embodiment of a selfie. It's...

...oh. That. Well, it was taken by Robert Cornelius, a chemist/photographer, in 1839. He took it in the back of a family store--so not in a bathroom mirror. He's kind of cute, though, dontcha think? And that attitude...well, he just screams "ahead of his time."

Finally, two random points:
Source
  • There is a social media app just for selfies. It is called Shots. Here, have it: http://shots.me/
  • This is relevant; it's "8 Tips for Taking an Awesome 'Selfie'". I thought it was funny because, quote, "Don't look so serious. Sure, there's something a little weird about seeming like you're laughing and having the time of your life when it's just you and your iPhone, but you know what's weirder? Making a sexy face to your iPhone." It starts to looks like this ----->

Darth Vader Can Fly

Source (which happens to rhyme with "The Force!")

Yep, that is a Darth Vader hot air balloon! It took eight weeks to make and was top-sekrit until its first public appearance. According to its website, darthvaderballoon.be, this is the technical information:

"26 meters ( 86 feet) high, basket included
21 meters ( 69 feet) wide
24 meters ( 78 feet) depth
Estimated hot air volume 3.000 m³ ( 105,000 cubic feet)
Estimated weight 290 kilos ( 640 lb)
Year of making : 2007
Pilots :
             Lambert Benoit
             Lambert Michel"

It has visited many places, from Russia to New Zealand, from Germany to Australia, from Thailand to Canada. And yes, it's dropped by the U.S. and U.K. as well. Check this schedule to see if it's visiting your galaxy next: http://www.darthvaderballoon.be/?page_id=71
P.S. I probably should have dropped clever Star Wars references in there, but I couldn't because I've never seen Star Wars before. I still think the balloon is awesome, though. :)

10% of the Population Hears an Unexplainable Hum

Do you hear an inexplicable low-frequency hum in the evening? Congrats; you are one of seven hundred million truly awesome people!
Earth likes to mess with us. For some reason there is a "frequency of around 10 millihertz pulsating around the world," which most humans shouldn't be able to hear, yet 10% of the planet's population does (quote here). It sounds like a "distant idling diesel engine," gets louder indoors, and is not affected by earplugs (quote here).
Why does Earth make that sound? How is it possible that humans can hear it? Do I wish I could hear The Hum? We don't know, we don't know, and yes, yes I do.
You can find a replication of The Hum here, but it can be very uncomfortable to listen to. I listened to it at a pretty high volume and didn't feel quite right for a few moments. (Yet I still wish I was one of those seven hundred million; go figure...) I suggest you listen to it at a low volume to dilute the eeriness.

Do you remember hearing strange trumpeting from the sky in 2011? (I don't, but you can't blame me--that was ages ago!) This occurred three years after scientists discovered what causes The Hum. These sounds were almost exactly aligned with The Hum, yet whole cities from all over the world could hear them. These loud noises were described as sounding like rusty trumpets. We still don't know what caused it.

Your Pedicurist is Cheating You Out of that which is Rightfully Yours

How to do home pedicure Source

Notice something in common? (Besides the obvious. Don't get cute, now.) These are the first ten results on Google Images when you search "pedicure"--minus two, because those results are two of the very few pedicure images that don't have...drum roll, please...flowers.
The majority of the results include flowers or petals: they're resting on the feet, snuggling up to the sides of the feet, in the soaking water, or completely filling a huge bucket for the feet to de-odorize in (I'm not sure if I saw an image quite like that, but scroll long enough and you will find something identical to that description). Maybe 'cause "feet" and "flowers" both start with F? Which, by the way, is called alliteration, my friends.
So if your pedicurist isn't rubbing your feet with roses, tickling them with tulips, or decorating them with daisies--and sending you home with a huge, aromatic bouquet--then demand your money back, 'cause flowers are clearly a requirement for pedis (though apparently not for manis).
And if you're not assaulting your feet with flowers when you do a home manicure...well, what's wrong with you?!

Spiders Can Make You Smile (Shocking, Right?!)

In the magical paradise of Hawaii, even the spiders are friendly!

I know what you're thinking. Ewewew, a spider tiny enough to crawl into my ear at night and eat my brain! Well, fear not (and squish not), reader, for if you zoom in on the harmless Happy Face Spider (Theridion grallator), you will find that it only wants to make friends with you.

Look at that smile!

Spindly-legged and nearly translucent, these spiders are only five millimeters long (so either the top-right picture in the montage above is photoshopped...or these spiders have gotten a lot less fun-sized since the Internet last wrote about 'em). Cute!
According to webecoist.momtastic.com, "When asked to comment on this tiny arachnid, Dr Geoff Oxford (a spider expert from the UK’s University of York) said: 'I must admit when I turned over the first leaf and saw one it certainly brought a smile to my face.'"

 Source
Actually, Happy Face Spiders can have many different types of markings, though I'm sure they're all as happy as the ones with smiles to prove it. And some don't have markings at all, but you can bet these spiders don't discriminate. (If you look them up on Wikipedia, you'll find that its only picture is of a pretty blank Happy Face. I mean, we love you anyway, little guy, but seriously, what's up with that?)

 Source
Now tell me you didn't smile too!
